Historique :	"Portrait de Mgr Cortois de Balore, attribué à Guillaume Voiriot sur la base d'une comparaison avec le portrait de Mgr Moreau, évêque de Mâcon (1764-1801), réalisé en 1771. Ce tableau a figuré à l'exposition ""Histoire du diocèse de Nîmes des origines à 1905"" tenue au Musée du Vieux Nîmes du 20 novembre 2015 au 31 janvier 2016. Né à Dijon en 1734, nommé évêque d'Alès le 20 mai 1776, sacré le 30 juin suivant, transféré le 25 juin 1784 sur le siège épiscopal de Nîmes, charge qu'il résigne en 1801. Il décède le 19 octobre 1812. A Alès il poursuit et achève les travaux d'agrandissement de la cathédrale. Député du Clergé aux Etats Généraux, il y fut un défenseur énergique de l'Eglise et même de la monarchie. Il refusa du haut de la tribune de l'assemblée Constituante le serment constitutionnel et émigra en 1792 en Hollande puis à Zurich. Guillaume Voiriot (1713-1799), né dans une famille d'artiste il put étudier quelques temps à Rome sous la direction de Lenormand de Tournehem, ministre des Beaux-Arts de Louis XV. Membre de l'Académie de Saint-Luc et de l'Académie royale de Peinture et Sculpture ; en 1785 Conseiller de l'Académie royale ; expose au Salon de cette compagnie de 1752 à 1791 et au Salon de la Correspondance en 1782. Il conserva à Paris le même atelier pendant 30 ans, rue Neuve-des-Petits-Champs mais dut le quitter pour le faubourg St-Germain sous la Révolution."
