Historique :	Portrait de Mgr de Bannes d'Avéjean. Né en 1688 au château d'Avéjan dans la région de Barjac, nommé 3e évêque d'Alès le 8 janvier 1721, sacré le 27 juillet suivant, il décède dans cette charge le 23 mai 1744. Il fit preuve d'un grand dévouement au cours de l'épidémie de peste qui frappa Alès la première année de son épiscopat. Il favorisa notamment les oeuvres d'enseignement et d'éducation des enfants pauvres. On lui doit également des travaux de réfection et d'embellissement de la cathédrale (la porte principale, la chaire, les orgues, ...) ainsi que la construction du palais épiscopal.
